Low Ember · Hand-poured candles, small batch

Winter collection sold out three weeks early on videos about smell

You can’t smell a phone screen. A small candle maker had its best season yet by asking creators what each scent reminded them of.

The challenge

Low Ember’s candles sell well in person, where people can pick one up and smell it. Online, the brand was stuck with pretty photos of wax. Its descriptions used the usual perfume-counter language, notes of this and hints of that, and very few customers could tell you what vetiver smells like. Regulars bought every season, but a stranger scrolling past had no way to tell one jar from the next.

The winter collection makes or breaks Low Ember’s year, and the founder needed it to reach well beyond her regulars.

What we did

We asked creators to drop the scent notes altogether. Each of eight creators received samples with one instruction: light it, wait ten minutes, then say the first memory it brings up. The brief was that short on purpose. They filmed at home, in the evening, with the lights down.

The answers did the selling. “This smells like my grandfather’s coat.” “This is the airport lounge I pretended I could afford.” Our video studio cut each one in 9:16 and 4:5, with subtitles carrying the words for anyone watching in silence.

What changed

The winter collection sold out three weeks before the Christmas delivery cut-off, and 58% of orders came from people who had never bought from Low Ember. Return on ad spend reached 2.7x across the quarter. The “grandfather’s coat” candle, previously a slow seller, was the first to go.

Several buyers quoted the creators’ lines back in their reviews, and those memories now appear on the product pages, where the scent notes used to be.

I make candles for a living, and I couldn’t have written “my grandfather’s coat” if you’d paid me. Someone else had to smell it first.
